Nature Macros (Water, Smoke and Bugs) | Jackie Bowling

Nature Macros (Water, Smoke and Bugs) is a collection of macro shots taken of bugs, water drops, water droplets and smoke. The bug photos were taken outside and the others were taken in a studio-like setting. I am trying to capture the smaller things that people may not see as they pass by. My hope is to give them a glimpse into the smaller world that makes up the larger picture.

Hyperchromatic Interstitium | Sarah Dexter

Sarah Dexter, Membrane, 2026, textile sculpture, 144 x 192 x 60 inches

JULY 2026
CENTER & SOUTH GALLERIES
Hyperchromatic Interstitium | Sarah Dexter

Hyperchromatic Interstitium is a celebration of the uncertain in a playground of texture and color. Through textile based forms, corporeal forms emerge as objects of fascination and contemplation, calling out for connection. These objects are a reminder of the precious hidden layers that can emerge with curiosity and the willingness to change.

Sarah Dexter is a fashion designer and multimedia artist based in Fairbanks, Alaska. After spending over a decade working in the medical field as an MRI technologist Sarah changed course to pursue her interest in fashion design. She graduated as the Valedictorian of the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City, in 2021 with a BFA in Fashion Design. Upon returning to her hometown, Sarah began creating small-batch collections with a strong commitment to ethically made slow fashion. Sarah recently graduated with an MFA from the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she is expanded her artistic mediums. Through explorations in fiber arts and soft sculpture, Sarah examines growth as an unruly process of joy and damage, enacted through deconstructed corporeal forms. Sarah’s work has been recognized by such honors as the “Golden Shears Award” from Omaha Fashion Week and “Designer of the Year” from Alaska Fashion Week.

Smoked Salmon | Susan Johnson

June 18, 2026 Karinna Gomez

JUNE 2026
SOUTH GALLERY
Smoked Salmon | Susan Johnson

Living near to the mouth of the Kasilof River provides me with both sustenance and independence. I fish, hunt, and work hard to produce most of my own food, and find that being able to taste Summer’s bounty throughout the cold and dark of Winter makes it worth the effort.

The preserving of the harvest has become an enjoyable seasonal ritual for me, and for the past several years, I have photographed and exhibited two previous bodies of work, 2025’s “Egg Series” and 2023’s “The Fruits of Our Labor”, that celebrated our farm and vegetable crops.

This current photo series is the third visual exploration of living sustainably, focused on the yearly Red Salmon run and the time-honored tradition of smoking fish to preserve the catch. My vision for this work was to concentrate on the details, and rather than using a strictly documentary style, I chose to focus on the strong verticals, bright colors, and differences in light and texture to present a more abstract view of the subject.

The use of a Diptych Format continues in keeping with the theme of previous exhibitions.

Drawn in Place | Kristin Link

Kristin Link, May Studies, watercolor and pen, 12 x 16 inches

MAY 2026
SOUTH GALLERY
Drawn in Place | Kristin Link

This exhibit is about what happens when we go outside, pay attention, and build a practice around what we find.

Loose daily diary sketches layer contour drawing with wet-on-wet watercolor washes to capture moods, weather, and the passage of time. Botanical studies track what plants are doing at different times of year. I return to the same plant across weeks and seasons, watching it change. My notes leave room for questions, research, and thinking out loud.

The nature studies of plants, animals, and landscapes in this exhibit were developed through years of teaching field sketching across Alaska. In April 2026, that practice became a book: Discover the Art of Field Sketching, published by Timber Press.

It's a joy to share this work with you, and to invite you into a sketching practice of your own. The world is better when we slow down, pay attention, and learn to find some love for what surrounds us.

EPIC FAIL | Simonetta Mignano

April 11, 2026 Karinna Gomez

APRIL 2026
SOUTH GALLERY
EPIC FAIL | Simonetta Mignano

This installation is the setting for a performative reading taking place on Friday, April 24 at 6:30 PM, a soft launch of Epic Fail 2009–2025, an artist’s book by Simonetta Mignano, released by Viaindustriae publishing in April 2026.

The project is a critical reflection on failure, seen through the presence of incorrectly drawn swastikas on public surfaces. The result of research conducted between 2009 and 2025, it reflects on how one of the most ancient and widely disseminated symbols—later appropriated by the Nazi regime—is repeatedly drawn incorrectly by those who attempt to reproduce it to assert ideological authority, turning the symbol into impressive achievements in failure and revealing their makers’ incompetence, which undermines the very claims to rigor and control they were meant to convey.

Combining humor, political critique, and personal reflection grounded in leftist perspectives, the project situates these graphic failures within a broader framework of ideological production and collapse. It considers how incompetence operates not merely as an incidental flaw but as an expression of larger political and cultural bewilderment. The project also considers these failures within a broader context of personal and collective struggle, where political defeat, absurdity, and laughter often seem to occur together.

This setting for the performative reading includes the music stands with the book cover and text, the score of My Heart Will Go On from Titanic and the flutes inspired by a YouTube-famous flute fail video. The sunlamp like the swastika in its ancient meaning—the wheel of the sun, radiating light. The two Polaroids were taken in 2023 in Naples, under the colonnade of Piazza del Plebiscito, showing several swastikas drawn incorrectly. The two posters are letterpress prints on fluorescent paper, which was formerly used for political signage in Italy, as it would be visible even at night. The books, CD, and DVD are a selection of references for the project, also cited in the book.

The project comes fully to fruition through the performative reading, where copies of the book are available. Hope to see you there.

Portal Series: Love

This is j.Reto is a continuation of the Portal Series of kinetic spaces (b&w stripes) with inanimate objects (rock-like forms). Here I challenged myself to produce inspired, informed and reimagined versions of classic works by Marc Chagall, Gustav Klimt and René Magritte, to name a few. The purpose is to explore the possibilities and expand the visual and conceptual language of this series. Thank you to all the local artists who inspire and challenge me to reach deep and express fully.

The Landscape of Imagination | Stephanie Johnson

The prints seen here as part of the Rarefied Light 2025 exhibition represent a personal vision to push my imagery beyond any specific or literal visual references—to see the unseen energy and essence of a place, a moment, a subject, or a location, to create artistic work that characterizes a fuller and more complete expression of the experience.  Using a variety of in-camera, analog, and creative processing techniques, my images tap into the landscape of my own imagination, where all expressions are unique to my inner creative spirit and cannot be replicated.

Drawn North: Portraits in Texture | Suzanne Yeremyan

Drawn North: Portraits in Texture features new work by abstract visual artist Suzanne Yeremyan, developed following a winter 2025 artist residency with Alaska State Parks. Her practice centers on experimental landscape portraiture, grounded in the textures, patterns, and movements found within a natural environment. Based in Rhode Island, Yeremyan spent several weeks in various remote regions of Southcentral Alaska. Staying in public-use dry cabins, daylight was spent outdoors on foot, gathering visual information to later highlight and work from upon her return to the East Coast.

This exhibition presents the final renderings of the notes and impressions gathered in and around Lowell Point, Eklutna Lake, and Turnagain Arm.

Last five years in the Chugach | Francesca Singleton

Last five years in the Chugach | Francesca Singleton

This collection of paintings is a visual journal and journey through my last five years in Alaska. Here, I selected scenes and macros that portray the Chugach mountains and their nature, as I experience them in my very frequent outings. It is an attempt to meditate on the uncommon beauty that I see every day, to let the eye and the mind linger in nature, dwelling in the outdoors even while indoors.

Fool's Paradise | Sally Carr

Sally Carr, Skinning a Rabbit detail, oil, canvas, wood panel, 46 x 72 inches

JULY 2025
SOUTH GALLERY
Fool's Paradise | Sally Carr

When you look at the past, the lost, what do you see?

Connection, it is a breath. It is a slowness.

A crab apple tree outside my window seemed to have more knowledge than I ever could dream to hold. Seemed to possess secrets of the world in a cyclical and literal sense. I yearned for its awareness of silence. It merely asked a few things of me, but I wasn’t aware enough to listen. I admired, appreciated, loved, and yet still didn’t hear the requests.

Growing complacent from its fruit, a child is one that takes without considering how to repay. How many times must this happen before you recognize your own imprecision.

Can one continue to maintain care in retrospect, or does it reshape into something more selfish. A search for silence, or maybe forgiveness. An empty gesture.

The Egg Series, a Collection of Related Images | Susan Johnson

The Egg Series, a Collection of Related Images | Susan Johnson

This project came into my life while adapting to sudden retirement and trying to deal with the isolation of my first long Winter in Kasilof. When it’s well below zero, it is way too cold to bring a camera outside. Despite that brutal cold, every day my Nine chickens were producing beautiful multicolored Eggs. They were not my usual subjects, and shooting indoors was a real change for me. I’d rather capture big dreamy landscapes outdoors, but this project proved to be a perfect way to keep shooting throughout the Winter.

After the editing and proofing were done, and when the prints were laid out on the table, I began to see how well the images related to each other. The layouts, shapes and colors formed into triptychs fairly naturally, and a concept was created out of chaos. These images were meant to stand alone, but since they all worked so well together, new visual relationships were created between the individual pieces, and the parts became a whole.

Sketchbooks | Carol Lambert

Presented in the North gallery for January, a collection of sketchbooks and drawings from Carol Lambert, curated by Joe and Sally Carr.

Carol was a longtime friend and supporter of the gallery as well as a regular exhibiting artist in our community.

As an accomplished painter and printmaker, Carol fundamentally took an analytic approach to her practice and method of creation. This involved countless hours of drawing and development of concept and ideas.

This exhibition provides insight into a truly unique creative mind, and a wonderful human being.

Memory Bank | Katie Ione Craney

This series is a reflection on my slow move from Southeast to the Interior; a process over 10 years in the making when I first started grad school and am now back to finish a degree in the Arctic & Northern Studies program. Within many of the images are words and phrases written in Braille. Some words repeat as meditations on their meaning and are in conversation with the place they are paired with. Incorporating Braille and mirrored surfaces into my work echoes a sensory experience of the lands and beings in the imagery. I’ve been learning to write in Braille as a communication attempt with my Great Grandmother Mary Etta, who was blind, as well as create space to consider many ways of knowing and being in relationship with a place or a person.

The handwritten Braille in this series is a letter-for-letter transcription, also known as Grade 1 Braille. The letters are written backwards, as I use a portable slate and a hand stylus to press the letters onto the page, or in this case, onto clear transparencies or into soft metal.

Unfrozen | Erica Miller

This is a love letter to the great land. After the gold has been extracted and the trees harvested; what remains of industry, the grand machinery of human endeavor, ambition and toil, sinks into the gentle embrace of earth. So prevalent in Alaska, the rusting iron of the past is beautiful somehow. Wrecked and abandoned now, it seems to belong, becoming a part of the forgiving landscape, a witness to the passage of time. It is a story of history and decay, of nature's reclaiming force, accepting the encroachment of age on all things.

Haiku | Shoko Takahashi

Haiku | Shoko Takahashi

This series of relief prints with type stamping is my visual Haiku.

Japanese Haiku focuses on capturing a moment in time, a sense of enlightenment, and images from nature. When I read Japanese haiku, I always feel a sense of calmness and fresh air. I wanted to create the feeling of Haiku by focusing on Alaskan and Japanese animals and keeping the image simple. By integrating text into the design, I created the written haiku feeling in each print.

Talismans

Have you ever had your identity stolen? Your money? Have you ever been hacked or your bank account and identity compromised? I certainly have!

Talismans are supposed to protect the user/wearer from bad luck or calamity. The talismans I have made will (hopefully) protect the wearer from evil stuff that happens in our digital world.

These talismans have wall mounts so that they can function as Art…not just live obscurely in a jewelry box in the bathroom!

WARNING: Should you purchase a talisman and find that it doesn’t protect you, no refunds!

CENTER GALLERY
Killer Drones

Look at the faces of the killer drones. Look at the faces (or bodies) of their victims.

Think about the killer drones’ racism, misogyny, homophobia, love of assault weapons, and hatred for others not like them.

This is the country and world you live in.

Protect yourself and your fellow human beings!

Landscapes

I am an artist who has lived in Alaska for 65 years, though I am far from an Alaskan artist!

I am consistently visually fascinated with the beautiful and amazing land mass that is this state.

As well, having driven through every state in this nation (except Vermont and Hawaii) and Canada, I also have memories of the many wondrous landscapes outside of Alaska.

So, I am always exploring alternative media and imagery to create landscapes from memory.

These days, I find that digital tools and media offer the quintessential alternatives!
