Figurescape | David Pettibone

David Pettibone, Rotten Apples, 2025, oil on mounted paper, 39”x35”

SEPTEMBER 2026
CENTER GALLERY
Figurescape | David Pettibone

It’s important to me that the painting is allowed to develop organically. I try to keep the work open for as long as possible. To do that, I paint directly from life. When painting this way nothing is static. Colors shift with the sun, shadows grow and then disappear. These infinite micro changes insert an element of the unexpected and force me to respond in ways that I could never plan for. Working on paper has allowed me to respond to these changes in new ways, through cutting away, adding to the composition and even collaging new substrate to manipulate the surface. The result is an improvisation of intermingling layers of physical texture, of illusion and flat strokes of color that weave the impression of figure and landscape into a cohesive whole.

This show SEX came about as my having an itch to create another art show at the IGCA and make it as playful as possible. I chose a controversial subject that asks the question what is sexy to you?

Life is very serious and as we age we need to play more. Enjoy this sexy show!

xochiyollotl, then and now converge, overlapping in my mind, acrylic on canvas, 3' x 4'

Solastalgia | xochiyollotl

I remember the first summer I noticed the trees shriveling, turning grey, eaten from the inside out. The air was hot and the rain never came. The swing tree and the joy it brought now lived only in my mind.

I remember the first winter the snow wasn’t falling as heavily as it used to. Roads without snowbanks, muddy ski trails, and trick-or-treaters without bulky layers under their costumes.

I remember the summer I pulled fish from the river, their bodies smaller than I'd grow to know. The time I saw white bellies in an eddy, where the water had pooled and the temperature rose.

I remember returning home from college. Seeing the retreat of glaciers, once blue, clear, and towering, now out of reach. Small things, white and dirty. Four short years - a lifetime.

I’m not much older now.

The world will not be what it was.

Geologies of Memory | Jennifer Moss

Jennifer Moss, Metamemory, synthetic polymer paints and mediums, tailored paper, digital press print, 18 x 18 inches

MAY 2026
CENTER GALLERY
Geologies of Memory | Jennifer Moss

We live in landscapes continuously shaped by geologic forces that are built upon memory. Through time, every moment on the land is collected in specks and pieces. Secrets are embedded in layers that build or sink and are made of plant and animal, dust and sunlight, wind and rain. Visual patterns emerge or are buried, like thoughts and memories and dreams that we animals have in our brief moment on earth. Symmetry, meanders, cracks, and other textures appear. They both describe order and are conduits for recollection. Unspoken languages and histories reside in these patterns. We love them for their beauty and we use them for our purposes. We mine and shape these land memories stored as peat, oil, metal and gas. We share collective memories of bright sun on the mountains, reflections in a lake, the sound of rocks tumbling down an incline, or the color of dirt. We see the shapes of this place and we are part of this place, this living and wild landscape. We will return to the dust that becomes the landforms here too. We will be absorbed into the patterns of moments in the land itself. All we are, our experience and our memories from our time forever joining with those of the land, intertwined and building this place we call home, together in a living landscape of memory.

Portal Series: Love

This is j.Reto is a continuation of the Portal Series of kinetic spaces (b&w stripes) with inanimate objects (rock-like forms). Here I challenged myself to produce inspired, informed and reimagined versions of classic works by Marc Chagall, Gustav Klimt and René Magritte, to name a few. The purpose is to explore the possibilities and expand the visual and conceptual language of this series. Thank you to all the local artists who inspire and challenge me to reach deep and express fully.

Our Daily Bread | Scott McDonald

FEBRUARY 2026
NORTH GALLERY
Our Daily Bread | Scott McDonald

The work for this show began while living in Spain. It began after the January 20 inauguration, and concluded a year later in Anchorage. Although it is not all specifically related it follows a thread: our dependence on and skepticism of media, our growing divides, the fear of the future, the polarity of our beliefs. I’m a big picture thinker, nothing is specific. I’ve been interested in the intersection of art and propaganda, and expression versus communication. I’ve been doomscrolling, I’ve been rubbernecking the headlines, mouth agape. I’m trying to digest it.

Anchorage Portrait Group

The Anchorage Portrait Group is a collective of artists who gather weekly to study the traditional practice of portraiture. For over ten years artists have gathered across Anchorage to create community and foster growth in observational painting. Crossing generations, this has been a group that has welcomed artists of many levels, working in a variety of mediums. This exhibition highlights the creative endeavors of the group over the past two years while we have been located within the annex studio space next door to the main IGCA gallery. This is not a class or a workshop, but an open session with models and passionate artists. All the artists within this group come from different studio practices and ideals, but within the three hours on Saturday morning, we sit down and create something universal.

DUOS is an experiment in collaboration between local artists. Each painting is the result of two artists working independently on different areas of the piece, then concealing the work and passing it onto the other artist. Neither artist knows what the completed piece looks like.

The works are hung fully wrapped and will be taken off the walls and torn open at 6pm opening night.

DUOS is also an experimental show with viewer participation. The paintings are meant to be held, passed around and rehung in any order. The randomness and spontaneity are aspects of the show.

In all, DUOS is an attempt to bring artists and audiences together, and to break down the divide between art and observer.

DUOS is curated by j.Reto, a founding member of CIRCLE5 art group.

Last five years in the Chugach | Francesca Singleton

This collection of paintings is a visual journal and journey through my last five years in Alaska. Here, I selected scenes and macros that portray the Chugach mountains and their nature, as I experience them in my very frequent outings. It is an attempt to meditate on the uncommon beauty that I see every day, to let the eye and the mind linger in nature, dwelling in the outdoors even while indoors.

Churning Mother | Brianna Allen

August 19, 2025 Karinna Gomez

AUGUST 2025
NORTH GALLERY
Churning Mother | Brianna Allen

“Churning Mother” explores the depth and agitation experienced in early motherhood and reflects on what emerges thereafter. The exhibit includes paintings, installation and literary work.

“Mother Of…” portraits are paintings of mothers with their hands full and their own identities changed forevermore. They are surrounded by their own early mothering ethos; preserved bouquets, faded stuffies, crystals, band aides and lollypops. This ongoing series of portraits invoke a kind of mothercode sentiment that feels safe when together.

Other paintings reflect a personal time of overload and burnout. These are a vulnerable offering for those who may have felt it too.

My published book, The Momologue Collective: An Anthology by Self-Identifying Mothers. Volume I, archives my ongoing social art practice of sharing the vulnerable depths of motherhood. The book features 100 anonymous stories which have inspired and continue to inspire my artwork and treasured relationships.

Fool's Paradise | Sally Carr

Sally Carr, Skinning a Rabbit detail, oil, canvas, wood panel, 46 x 72 inches

JULY 2025
SOUTH GALLERY
Fool's Paradise | Sally Carr

When you look at the past, the lost, what do you see?

Connection, it is a breath. It is a slowness.

A crab apple tree outside my window seemed to have more knowledge than I ever could dream to hold. Seemed to possess secrets of the world in a cyclical and literal sense. I yearned for its awareness of silence. It merely asked a few things of me, but I wasn’t aware enough to listen. I admired, appreciated, loved, and yet still didn’t hear the requests.

Growing complacent from its fruit, a child is one that takes without considering how to repay. How many times must this happen before you recognize your own imprecision.

Can one continue to maintain care in retrospect, or does it reshape into something more selfish. A search for silence, or maybe forgiveness. An empty gesture.

Our Better Angels | Ted Kincaid

JUNE 2025

Our Better Angels | Ted Kincaid

When we think of political art we tend to think of violent and accusing images drawing attention to the double standards and faults of humanity.  Our Better Angels is a show bent on the other half of that argument, the "now what" side of change.  Ted Kincaid uses his graffiti-meets-indy comic art style to bring legends out of reality and places them on a pedestal.  Better Angels continues on a 2011 body of work as he tries to modernize both the people included but also the style into a more vibrant and punchy multi-media approach.

Sketchbooks | Carol Lambert

Sketchbooks | Carol Lambert

Presented in the North gallery for January, a collection of sketchbooks and drawings from Carol Lambert, curated by Joe and Sally Carr.

Carol was a longtime friend and supporter of the gallery as well as a regular exhibiting artist in our community.

As an accomplished painter and printmaker, Carol fundamentally took an analytic approach to her practice and method of creation. This involved countless hours of drawing and development of concept and ideas.

This exhibition provides insight into a truly unique creative mind, and a wonderful human being.

Unfrozen | Erica Miller

This is a love letter to the great land. After the gold has been extracted and the trees harvested; what remains of industry, the grand machinery of human endeavor, ambition and toil, sinks into the gentle embrace of earth. So prevalent in Alaska, the rusting iron of the past is beautiful somehow. Wrecked and abandoned now, it seems to belong, becoming a part of the forgiving landscape, a witness to the passage of time. It is a story of history and decay, of nature's reclaiming force, accepting the encroachment of age on all things.

Listening to the Quiet | Cheryl Lyon

Listening to the Quiet | Cheryl Lyon

Listening to the quiet is about noticing what I notice when I venture outdoors through the Alaska seasons. Taking in the beautiful complexities before me. Paying attention to the light as it gracefully skips across the water or shines through the clouds.  Listening to the wind as it whispers through the trees, and gently moves around my face. As the poet Mary Oliver said about nature, “If you notice anything, it leads you to notice more and more”. I agree, I long ago embraced, I’m always painting, even when I’m not painting. I’m an observer, an explorer and an eternal student.

The images are based on elements from my homeplace, a place that has mesmerized me with its splendor my whole life. Alaska: My Take. Please enjoy!

Textile artist, Abigail Kokai, has fabricated a world of little fuzzy haired characters that manifest into human-size form as they visit Panda Mick's RV Park and Stay-In. Through a collection of small sculpture, air-blown inflatables and paintings Abigail constructs a universe of creature comforts inside the gallery.
