February Event:
Artist Talk with Klara Maisch

Saturday, February 5 at 4:00 p.m. in-person at IGCA and virtually via Instagram Live.

Over the past year, Klara Maisch visited landscapes throughout Alaska to create large oil paintings on-site. The exhibit features repeat paintings of the Gulkana Glacier, work created in the Boreal Forest at -30ºF/-34ºC, and pieces started inside frozen tunnels of glacial ice. These place-based paintings highlight specific landscapes experiencing the effects of large-scale climate change, including glaciers, recent forest fires, and along the Northern edge of treeline. In science, "ground truth" refers to information collected via direct observation while on location. Although scientific research informs this work, the process of painting outside adds layers of awareness, connection, and interpretation that science alone can’t communicate. The exhibit presents 21 new paintings alongside information about each location.

Credits: The exhibit is made possible by a Career Opportunity Grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The work is also supported in part by the Ma Johnson’s Historical Hotel, The Explorers Club, and Discovery.
