"Chlorine Aqualung" and other works produced during a pandemic | Graham Dane
Everything in this show was completed in the last twelve months (even if it was started a few years back) and some of it in the last week. The charcoal drawings are all recent and were a return to drawing as a serious activity in itself, to explore new ideas, languages and fears that seemed to manifest itself as the political incompetence turned negligent and the fatalities began to accrue.
Some of these projects are outside of what I’m normally known for – a handmade and painted chess set; a newly refurbished, re-painted children’s building set (with a hundred plus additions) that was originally my granddaughter's. Even this is potentially tainted by being used by strangers hence the sanitizer required before using it.
Finally, a series of studies after northern Old Master paintings. The northern and southern European traditions are different and I associate with the former rather than the latter. The only ones shown here are after Rembrandt’s Faustus etching which, considering the politics of the last year, seemed appropriate (with the exception of the knowledge part of the story).
