The goal of the IGCA is to provide a clean, well-lit space to accommodate the creative vision of our exhibiting artists. For many years we have operated at 427 D Street in a space divided into three galleries that accommodate exhibitions of various sizes. Over decades the gallery has operated on a simple plan with monthly exhibitions that open on the first Friday of each month. We have regular open hours staffed by volunteers.
We have recently expanded into the space at 425 D Street and created an additional exhibition space. Rather than incorporating this new space by simply adding it to our existing program of monthly exhibitions, we are excited to try a more experimental approach. In this way we hope to free artists from the confines of the monthly calendar and inspire even more creativity.
Artists may propose exhibitions for the Annex that do not fit into our more traditional gallery space for whatever reason. This might include work that is of very short duration such as a performance. It might include work that doesn’t fit the monthly exhibition for other reasons. The Annex gallery is also our largest gallery space and may offer creative inspiration for installations or any other exhibition that doesn’t fit well in our more traditional gallery space.
But we don’t want to tell artists what the space is for. We want artists to tell us what they envision for the space.
SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL FOR THE ANNEX GALLERY
When going through the IGCA exhibition proposal process, artists will have the option to select either the traditional 427 galleries or the Annex. Artists who propose an exhibition for the Annex will be asked to provide the following information:
An explanation of how the exhibition is better served at the Annex rather than the more traditional gallery space
A timeline for installation and duration of the exhibition
Because the Annex space is not a part of the gallery’s regular volunteer staffed open hours schedule, artists will be asked for their plan to make the work available for viewing
Any questions regarding the space and the proposal portal should be directed to : exhibitions@igcaalaska.org
