ALL GALLERIES: Nathan Shafer
"Information Commando"
Nathan Shafer explores memes or cultural units such as ideas or patterns of behavior in "Information Commando," a show that includes videos of interactive events involving cryonics and liquid nitrogen, Web site data turned into conceptual art, graphic mixes of chaos magic and structural diagrams, and recreations of fictional artwork from science fiction novels.

Viewers will first see objects like a five-foot tall fiberglass cone covered with guinea fowl feathers and emanating light, along with a six-foot long coat hanger with a ten-foot deflated canvas skyscraper folder over its bar. Noise from various videos and audio pieces will permeate the four bodies of work.

Between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on First Friday, the Sub-Arctic Reenactment Society of Living Yore will do a series of unannounced micro-performances between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. he International Gallery invites people to videotape the performances if they catch the action and then email them to video@igcaalaska.org for posting to the IGCA website and YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/igcavideo

“The work is not negative or down,” said Shafer. "It is up and wanting to look outward. It is not emotive or expressive work. I have no desire to share anything other than information and a smile with people."

He also noted that "There will be lots of extraterrestrial baggage in the show."

More of Nathan's work can be see on his website http://nshafer.com/
