WRITING FOR ARTISTS: How to craft media releases, artist statements and more

Session one: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 13. Session two: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 20. A workshop of press releases, artist statements and proposals written by participants with an emphasis on defining the audience, evaluating the writing as it reflects the body of art and revising drafts to enliven and narrow focus.

WHEN: 10 to 11:30 p.m. Saturdays, September 13 and 20
COST: $25 for both sessions or $15 for the first session only; students with IDs pay $15 for both sessions, $10 for the first only (www.igcaalaska.org, 279-1116)

There is no deadline for finished tiles, but visitors will be encouraged to view them beginning July First Friday

ART/CHALLENGE

Every First Friday, the IGCA will release a new Art/Challenge. The first Art/Challenges will be simpler and open, and will gradually become more "complicated" with each subsequent challenge. Expect many elements to change, from dimensions, to media, to concept, to audience/ placement of display, and more.

RULES:

  1. Participation is open to IGCA Members.
  2. Members have approximately a month to finish the challenge (First Friday until the last Sunday prior to the First Friday).
  3. Work must be dropped off on the Sunday preceding First Friday (or earlier) to be included in the exhibition.
  4. The artwork MUST be made for the challenge during the given time frame; the intent of the program is to encourage new work and challenge artists to push boundaries.
  5. Artists are encouraged to look at every aspect of the challenge: literal or abstract, history of, intention, etcetera, everyday to obscene. If the challenge seems to limit what you can do, you need to look a little closer. Push boundaries. NO LIMITS!

The IGCA will select the top, most innovative and well conceived and executed piece every month. The artists chosen over the next 12 months will be invited to participate in a group show of innovative Art/Challenge artists. Two artists will be chosen every month, one by the IGCA and one by public vote of "peoples’ choice". The two artists will be announced with the release of the next month's Art/Challenge.

Please include the following with your piece:
       name:
       email:
       phone number:
       mailing address:
       title of work:
       medium:
       price (or NFS):

FREEZE Brings Designers from Across the World to Alaska

FREEZE is an outdoor, winter exhibition, with a coordinating publication and series of public lectures and programs, featuring designers (architects, artists, landscape architects, lighting designers, graphic designers and others) from around the globe working in collaboration to create installations that feature, as primary materials, snow, ice and light - elements that characterize winter in the north. FREEZE will take place along the Delaney Park Strip in downtown Anchorage. This is the largest project of its kind to be organized in Alaska, with the largest collection of designers of international standing ever to be assembled here to create work and discuss issues related to architecture, art and the north. It is a unique and exciting opportunity for Alaska.

Polar regions are receiving increasing attention in these times of climate change and environmental awareness. FREEZE will help to bring renewed attention to life in the Arctic and will serve as a celebration of winter. The installations will be ephemeral but will have a lasting impact.

FREEZE participants come from around the globe, including Alaska, Canada, Norway, Iceland, Germany, England, California, Arizona and Washington. Participants will be assembled into 12 teams. Each team will work together to create one installation – whether it is a structure or an experience/environment. This is not a competition between teams but rather collaboration between individuals and disciplines and a sharing of ideas and perspectives.

Team members will be present in Anchorage for a 10-day period, realizing and constructing their design and participating in public lectures and programs, beginning with a New Year’s Eve party at the Anchorage Museum on December 31, 2008 and culminating with a public opening of the installations on the Park Strip on January 10, 2009.
